After writing a children’s book Dr. Ronak Mehta did’t seem much initial success so she put the book on the shelf for over 20 years. Then with a little bit of encouragement she made the characters in her book come to life and change the conversation about organs and medicine.

About Dr. Ronak Mehta

Dr. Ronak Mehta is the founder and CEO of Nerdbugs and board-certified Family Medicine/Obesity Medicine physician. She is a former Clinical Assistant Professor at the University of Wisconsin’s School of Medicine and Public Health. Ronak is one of NPR’s How I Built This fellows and Nerdbugs, her plush toy company, was a finalist for Amazon’s Women-Owned Small Business of the Year.

After completing residency training in Family Medicine at Cook County/Loyola University, Dr. Mehta pursued an Integrative Medicine Fellowship in Washington, DC. During her time at Cook County/Loyola University, Dr. Mehta developed a strong appreciation of the pivotal role of education in supporting patients to create lasting lifestyle changes by empowering them with a solid understanding of their diagnosis and treatment.

After a brief stint in Salt Lake City, Utah, in 2019, she moved back to her native state of Wisconsin to work with the Department of Family Medicine physician at the University of Wisconsin. She is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and is also certified in Obesity Medicine.

Nerdbugs are adorable, lovable anatomical plush organs that are on a mission to teach about acceptance and inclusivity while celebrating health and wellness. For Nerdbugs, our brand’s ultimate purpose goes beyond toys. We want to create awareness about different medical and mental health conditions and help reduce stigma and create a kinder and more accepting world. We use adorable plushies to start conversations about medical and mental health. We help people understand their bodies in a fun way that celebrates our differences.

Since launching Nerdbugs in 2018, she has built an incredible international presence with Nerdbugs and has been featured in Forbes, Business Insider, NPR, ​Madison, WI’s top 40 under 40. She has been featured on TV news channels and podcasts, and has partnered with several medical organizations to support awareness initiatives with Nerdbugs.

Dr. Mehta describes, “As a physician, that I feel privileged to have the opportunity to make an impact on someone’s life. With Nerdbugs, I feel so grateful to be able to do this on a larger scale and in some small way help impact the lives of strangers all over the world by helping bring some sunshine into their life while they may be going through the rougher patches in life. I feel as if I get to be a part of people’s stories all over the world which is pretty neat.”
