2020 RedTree Intern Insights – Sam & Leah

It’s important to us here at RedTree to invest in the future generation, so each year we always try to have interns on our staff. This year, with a pandemic, we wanted to share with everyone what their experiences were like working with RedTree.

Leah

Introduction (roles and responsibilities):

This summer, I had the pleasure of working alongside the RedTree team as a marketing intern. I was responsible for reconfiguring the social media schedule to adjust to the changing needs of the company and creating many of these posts myself. In addition, I took over social media engagement.

Wins:

The biggest win I experienced with RedTree is seeing the posts I created and scheduled on my own social media feeds. I’ve never been able to see my work being used in a professional light like that. I know that when I scroll through my accounts during the next few months, I can continue to see the posts I made getting comments and likes, which is such a rewarding feeling.

Lessons Learned:

Like many other students, my summer plans fell apart around the time of spring break. This internship taught me to lean into opportunities. As the pandemic threw many challenges my way, I found the most success steering into the skid. Accepting the change and going with the flow has been a hard lesson to learn. As I continue to move forward with my professional life, I hope to keep in mind to be grateful for the unexpected. It has plenty more lessons to teach.

Favorite Part about the internship:

My favorite part about this internship was being able to watch such an amazing group of women come together during such a strange time. Seeing the support that the team gives one another was so inspiring. Simply being on a thirty-minute video call each week with them made me feel empowered.

Sam

Introduction (roles and responsibilities):

This summer, I had the opportunity to work with RedTree as an intern working on web design and development. I worked on a task management web application with the guidance of the team. Over the past three months, I was able to use design tools to create a prototype and build a functioning end product with React, a JavaScript web framework.

Wins:

This was the first time I completed a thought-out design and turned it into a functional application, so that is a big win for me! I was able to touch on all aspects of the product management process and that has been super valuable. I was also able to learn and utilize different technologies, and it is always rewarding to gain new skills.

Lessons Learned:

I learned a lot about how to manage myself through a project. At first, I would sometimes not know where to start or I would get too far ahead of myself. The RedTree team was able to help me during these moments by walking with me through my process and where I needed to go. They gave me important guidance on how to keep myself on track.

Favorite Part about the internship:

My favorite part about this internship was being able to meet and work with such a wonderful team. Even though meetings were not able to be done in person, I really enjoyed getting to know them and greatly appreciated the new interactions during these uncertain times!
